Wartime pilot helps launch Sunderland Trust.....Posted
02.04.07
A wartime flying boat pilot
will be reunited with parts of his actual aircraft when
the Pembroke Dock Sunderland Trust is launched on
Monday April 2nd, 2007.
Wing Commander Derek
Martin, OBE, who
lives in Berkshire, is chief guest at the launch which
takes place at Sunderland House, Admiralty Way, The
Royal Dockyard, Pembroke Dock, at 10.30 am.
In September 1940 Wing
Commander Martin, then just 20-years-old, piloted
Sunderland T9044 on one of its first flights in RAF
service from Pembroke Dock.
In November 1940 T9044
sank at its moorings at Pembroke Dock. There was no crew
on board and the aircraft was not discovered for
decades. It is the only Mark I Sunderland left in the
world and just one of four survivors out of nearly 750
Sunderland's built.
An engine and several
other parts of the aircraft have already been recovered
by divers and are being restored.
The Pembroke Dock
Sunderland Trust aims to recover the remains of T9044
and to restore as much as possible of this unique
aircraft for display at Pembroke Dock, as part of a
Battle of the Atlantic exhibition which will also tell
the story of military flying-boats.....
..........watch this space for details. The web project
will be adding new sections reporting the Sunderland
Trusts activities, and also coming to the project an
article on the Royal Air Force Launches based here

Welsh tournament reborn 500
years on
This year marks the 500th anniversary
of the last great jousting tournament in Wales, at Carew Castle in
Pembrokeshire and to celebrate the castle will be recreating this
five day event with a series of re-enactments, storytelling and
concerts (May 2-7).
In 1507 a host of knights were welcomed to Carew to honour Sir Rhys
ap Thomas and his admission into the Order of the Garter.
Celebrations included hunting, feasting, music, dancing, a ride to
Lamphey Palace for mass by the Bishop of St. Davids and a
spectacular jousting tournament.
Highlights of Carew 500: The Great
Tournament include:
- A concert of early and sacred
music in Carew Church featuring the Quaynotes Choir (May 3 -
£6).
- A cavalcade of horses to
Lamphey Palace with free viewing from the Lamphey Showground.
- Two days of re-enactment of the
Great Tournament (May 6-7) with jousting, falconry, archery,
craft demonstrations and early music with Medieval re-enactment
groups (adults £8).
Carew Castle is in south west Wales,
90 miles from Cardiff, and overlooks a 23 acre millpond and the only
restored tidal mill in Wales.

Pembrokeshire Park is Green Dragon pacesetter
The Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority is
a Welsh pacesetter on environmental standards.
It has gained the Green Dragon
Environmental Standard® Level Four for all its services - the first of
the Welsh National Parks to achieve this hard to attain certification.
ARENA Network, which runs
the standard, set the National Park ever higher environmental
performance standards to reach right across all its operations, not just
at its Llanion Park, Pembroke Dock, headquarters.
Said Authority Chairman, Councilor Simon
Hancock: “Reaching such a high level of a
nationally
recognised standard is an excellent
achievement and reflects the hard work put in by our staff. The
Authority is committed to minimising the impacts of our operations,
balancing the needs of the environment with operational obligations and
available resources.”
Sustainable Development Officer Ruth Cook, who co-ordinates Green Dragon
for the Authority, added: “Working with ARENA Network, we have
implemented an environmental management structure which reduces our
impact on the environment in our day-to-day activities. The Standard
greatly assists the Authority in its environmental performance, in
adopting best practice and in making savings through resource reduction.
There are five levels to the standard and the Park Authority is aiming
for the highest Level Five for next year.

Story of the Brownslade Barrow
The story behind one of Pembrokeshire’s
most important and exciting archaeological digs will be updated at a
talk at Castlemartin Camp on Wednesday March 28th.
Last summer’s month-long dig at Brownslade Barrow, on the Castlemartin
Range, revealed an early Christian burial ground with over 40 well
preserved graves, dating back over 1,000 years.
The dig was funded by the Ministry of Defence and co-ordinated by
Cambria Archaeology and the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority.
National Park Archaeologist Polly Groom, who played a major part in the
excavation, will be giving the talk, starting at 7 pm in the Camp’s
briefing theatre.
Said Polly: “This is an update of our on-going work on this important
project. Our dig was the first since Victorian archaeologists had
investigated the barrow in the 1880s and has given us a new insight into
a very important site and a period in our history.”

limited please register your attendance in advance by telephoning 01646

Dear Colleague
PAVS ICT project has, over the last few years, supported your
community group through website creation, workshops and a free
web hosting service.
As technology progresses rapidly, it has become clear that in
order to continue providing the most effective web hosting
solution for your needs, we need to upgrade the server package
that we use. Please ensure that the person responsible for
managing your groups' website receives the following important
information. We have purchased a new server and will be
undertaking a planned work programme over the next 2 weeks in
order to migrate all of our websites from the old server to the
new. This work should not cause any interruption of service to
your site but means that we will have to back up each site
before
relocating it to the new server. Could you please avoid updating
your website if possible until we have completed the transfer
which is planned for February

Free WiFi broadband for everyone
Milford Haven is set to benefit from a generous gift this
Christmas. The communications company, TFL-Group, has singled out the
town for this exciting project which will offer free WiFi
broadband for everyone. TFL have already successfully
‘Hotzoned’ the Milford waterway with WiFi broadband access available to
all vessels in the Haven, so the technology is proven.
Making use of redundancy in their growing comms network, TFL are able to
offer this service to the community at no charge. They do not plan to
profit from the offering. They are set to go live with the Milford Haven
Hotzone in January 2007. We’ll soon be able to hook up our computers to
a local WiFi broadband network for free.
The company hope to extend the network into other areas such as Neyland,
Pembroke Dock, Narberth, St Davids and Fishguard. Here at Pembrokeshire
People we’ll definitely be giving the service a whirl and we’ll keep you
posted with developments. Source.....Pembrokeshire

Find out more about renewable energy
and how to install it?
The first Energy Awareness Day at Llys y fran Visitors Centre in October
was a great success! It was a lovely day with lots going on and very
well attended. The presentations were fully booked and well-received,
and attendees felt they had gained more knowledge about renewable energy
systems, sustainable building and planning issues. Most left motivated
to do something new to reduce CO2 emissions. The second event on 18th
November will again be hosted by PLANED in partnership with key agencies
such as ARENA Network and Pembrokeshire Coast National Park. I am the
Energy & Recycling Officer for PLANED and since starting my role in
January 2006 I have met many people from all over Pembrokeshire who have
an interest in renewable energy, sustainable building, energy efficiency
and recycling. This is very encouraging, but levels of interest and
knowledge vary from complete energy efficiency novices to long-term
energy self-sufficient experts. Most people are enthusiastic and want to
do something to become more energy efficient and/or use renewable energy
but are in danger of becoming frustrated, perceiving that bureaucratic
systems and costs are thwarting their efforts. These events go some way
to address these issues and encourage people to develop their ideas and
schemes.
Speakers are confirmed on subjects including community renewable
projects, regulations and planning for renewable systems, how to be
energy efficient at home, alternatives to fossil fuel and an overview of
which renewable energy system individuals should install. There will be
workshops on energy efficiency and making great compost, and installers
will be showing displays of renewable energy systems including solar
heating, solar pv, wind turbines, and heat pumps. There will be examples
of green building and recycling, and energy and planning experts will be
on hand to answer your questions.I look forward to seeing you there!
