VISIT TO PEMBROKE DOCK BY 8 FORMER MEMBERS OF THE WEST GERMAN NAVY TO COMMEMORATE THE TRANSFER OF THE DESTROYER HMS EGGESFORD TO THEIR NAVY UNDER THE NAME “BROMMY”.

HMS Eggesford

On Thursday 22nd May 2008 a party of 8 former sailors will be visiting Pembroke Dock and its surrounding area to mark the transfer some 50 years ago of a former British Destroyer to the then West German Navy. The 8 sailors are:-

The party will attend a number of functions during their stay which lasts from 22 to 25th May including a Civic Reception and Dinner organised by Pembroke Dock Town Council, a tour of the Haven on board a Milford Haven Port Authority vessel, a Visit to the Angle Lifeboat Station and Angle Hall as well as visiting some of the areas they got to know during their stay in Pembrokeshire whilst the vessel was being refit by R S Hayes Ltd in Pembroke Dock. The Civic Dinner to be held on Friday 23rd May will be attended by some of the staff of R S Hayes who had contact with the West German Navy whilst the vessel was being refitted. The German Naval Attaché, Goran Swistek, and the Honorary German Consul, Mrs Helga Rother-Simmonds, will also be attending together with the Honorary Maltese Consul, Sir Brooke Boothby and the Lord Lieutenant for Dyfed, Hon. Robin and Mrs. Lewis.

PROGRAMME OF EVENTS. 

Thursday 22nd May 2008.

Party arrives in Pembroke Dock and are accommodated at the Travelodge. The party is met Councillor Ron Watts and the Town Council Clerk, Mr Ian Jones.

Friday 23rd May 2008.

1100hrs – Civic Reception and Buffet in the Council Chamber with display of photographs etc relevant to the transfer.

The event to include welcome by the Mayor of Pembroke Dock and other dignitaries.

1300hrs – Walk around the town (old haunts revisited) including visit to Military Cemetery, Old Dockyard and other historic areas.

1530hrs – Free Time

1800hrs – Civic Dinner at the Cleddau Bridge Hotel.

Saturday 24th May 2008.

1000hrs – Transported by Mini Bus to Carr Jetty where the party will board (1030hrs) one of the Milford Haven Port Authority Pilot Boats for a tour up and down the Haven.

1230hrs – Return to Carr Jetty and then taken by Minibus to the Pater Hall for a buffet lunch.

1430hrs – Remainder of afternoon / evening at leisure but a visit to Milford Haven and other northern parts of the County possible (e.g. visit to Haverfordwest, St. Davids, Dale etc).

Sunday 25th May 2008.

1000hrs – Visit to Angle Lifeboat Station (arriving at 1030hrs) and morning coffee with Mr and Mrs John Allen-Mirehouse whose great grandmother was Lady Catherine Allen and who lived at Eggesford House in Devon. Also visit to Chapel Bay Fort.

1200hrs - Visit to Freshwater West and East on way to Jameston

1300hrs – Lunch break at Tudor Lodge Restaurant, Jameston

1430hrs – Visit to Manorbier, Tenby and Saundersfoot.

1600hrs – Visit to Gun Tower Museum at Pembroke Dock
