“Milford Haven Port Authority’s 50th Anniversary gives schools the chance to investigate their waterway”

Celebrating their 50th anniversary in 2008, Milford Haven Port Authority has developed a programme of exciting field events with the Darwin Centre, enabling several local schools to investigate and celebrate the waterway.

Pembroke Dock Community School kicked off a series of exciting field events for Junior schools recently. The field events, coordinated by the Darwin Centre, are led by Sid Howells (Countryside Council for Wales) and take the pupils on a journey from Blackpool Mill to Angle Bay.

The groups will stop along the Estuary and examine the formation of the waterway and its importance to the area through history to the present day. St. Francis RC and Haverfordwest VC, will all also be experiencing the information packed field trip. Following the fieldwork, Darwin Festival Coordinator Marten Lewis will visit the schools and help them develop an investigative science project, for assessment via the British Association for the Advancement of Science BA CREST Awards.

Says Darwin Science Festival Co-ordinator Marten Lewis, "Using the outdoors as a classroom is key to all the Darwin Science Festival's aims, working with MHPA and Sid Howells will allow over 75 pupils to really experience the waterway as never before."

He continues "Darwin is very pleased to be delivering such an informative programme, and would like to thank MHPA for inviting us on board in such a special year for them.”

Projects will be presented at an event in the newly refurbished Torch Theatre on 14th March, where the pupils will take part workshops led by organisations involved in conservation on and around the Haven.

The collaborative programme has been developed through Milford Haven Port Authority’s Community Initiative.
