INFLATION BEATING MINIMUM WAGE RISE WELCOMED

An inflation beating increase in the minimum wage for Pembrokeshire workers has been welcomed by local Labour AM Alun Davies.
The rise which will come into effect in October will see the current hourly rate of £5.52 rise to £5.73 for adults with similar rises in place for 18 – 21year olds and 16 and 17 year olds.
Alun Davies AM says:
“This rise is very welcome and will have a huge impact on people living and working in Pembrokeshire. It has been ten years since Labour first introduced minimum wage legislation. Over this time the minimum wage coupled with working and child tax credits have lifted more and more people out of poverty.
“There is no doubt that we are in a period where the cost of living is rising and it is right that the minimum wage should increase to reflect this. Whilst other parties have criticised the minimum wage, I am proud that Labour in Cardiff and Westminster continues to stand up for workers rights in Wales and the rest of the UK. Alun Davies was speaking following the announcement today (Wednesday 5th March) by the Prime Minister Gordon Brown. The rise in October will be noticeable in workers pay packets in time for Christmas.
Alun Davies AM continues:
“It is extremely important that employees know their rights. There is still a need for workers to be protected and I am please that under new legislation before parliament there will be even tougher action against unscrupulous employers who continue to ignore basic workers rights.”
“The minimum wage has helped improve the financial situation of individuals and families across Pembrokeshire. Together with the Working and Child Tax Credits, the national minimum wage will currently guarantee that every family with one child and one person in full-time work will receive a minimum income of £276 per week from October 2007.”
