Local Pupils Gain CREST Awards at Assessment Day In new Studio
Theatre
Seventy five pupils from local
schools around the Waterway had a sneak preview of The Torch Theatre’s
new Studio Theatre, sponsored by Milford Haven Port Authority (MHPA) on
Friday 14th March.
The pupils were attending an Assessment Day as the culmination of a
collaborative project between the Darwin Centre and MHPA’s Community
Initiative- a significant project for the Authority during its 50th
Anniversary year.
Following a series of recent investigative research Field Trips,
organised by the Darwin Centre and led by Sid Howells of the Countryside
Council for Wales, local junior school pupils completed project work to
be assessed by the British Association for the Advancement of Science BA
CREST Awards. The Assessment Day was a BA supported event, as part of
National Science and Engineering Week.
During the Assessment Day, the schools presented their projects, with
each school having focussed upon a different aspect of the Waterway, its
history and use.
Haverfordwest VC examined the geological development of the Waterway and
impact of differing weather conditions. Milford Haven’s St Francis RC
examined shipping figures, charting the gross tonnage over the last ten
years. The pupils also looked at the shift in average sizes of leisure
craft. Pembroke Dock Community School focussed on eight locations and
researched their history and geographical placement along the Waterway.
Pupils participated in workshops run by the Darwin Centre, Keep Wales
Tidy and the Pembrokeshire Activity Centre. The Assessment Day and
collaborative programme was funded through MHPA’s Community Initiative.
Marten Lewis of the Darwin Centre commented "I think we have found an
excellent format for raising awareness of the very special Milford Haven
Waterway, the field trips, workshops, projects and celebration at the
Torch were all first class. I would like to thank MHPA, and everyone
involved"
Claire Palmer, Milford Haven Port Authority’s Community Officer said of
the programme “I am amazed at how much has captured the imaginations of
the young people and how much information they have learnt and retained
about the Waterway. This certainly was a worthwhile collaboration and
one which we hope will become an annual event, benefiting school
children around the County.”
