Children visiting Carew Castle and Tidal Mill are receiving one
of the best education services on offer in Britain.
That’s the view of the Heritage Education Trust, which has
awarded Carew its prestigious Sandford Award for Education.
The castle and mill, managed by the Pembrokeshire Coast National
Park Authority, has now won the award on three consecutive
occasions.
The Heritage Education Trust only gives the award to
organisations offering exceptional education services and an
outstanding contribution to educational heritage. The awards are
valid for five years and each organisation must apply for a
reappraisal.
Phil Bennett, the National Park Authority’s Head of
Archaeological Heritage, said: “Congratulations to everyone at
Carew for securing this well-deserved award.
“This brings to a total of six the Sandford Awards won by the
National Park Authority between Carew Castle and Tidal Mill and
Castell Henllys Iron Age Fort. We are proud to have been
providing a benchmark of quality delivery since 1999.”
In his appraisal of Carew, Heritage Education Trust lead judge
Gareth Fitzpatrick said:
"Carew Castle and Tidal Mill occupy a place in history as
striking as their location. With roots back in the Celtic mists
of time, the Castle stands sentinel over the tidal millpond.
“Costumed interpreters bring the site to life, giving children a
vivid and appropriate lesson of just a small pinprick in the
long and turbulent history of the site, helping their
understanding and appreciation of the cultural and environmental
history that is around them."
