PORT PROMOTES A SAFE SEASON FOR LEISURE USERS

Ahead of a traditionally busy Easter period, Milford Haven Port Authority is encouraging leisure users to enjoy the Haven, whilst reminding them to ‘play safe and be fully prepared'

The Easter weekend marks the beginning of the Haven's leisure season, with many boat enthusiasts launching again for the first time in the year.
Port Authority Harbourmaster, Mark Andrews encourages enjoyment of the Waterway, but is keen to ensure that "safety remains a priority".

"The majority of the Haven is dedicated to recreational use and we're delighted that people want to enjoy the water, but we are also a commercial port, with increasing levels of commercial shipping. We want to remind people that safety is vitally important" he said.

As well as checking and servicing their vessels,  boating enthusiasts are reminded that wearing proper protective clothing and a well maintained life jacket is essential, as is familiarising yourself with the advice given in both the Maritime & Coastguard Agency and the RNLI  publications. Those who have moorings in the river need to inspect and maintain their tackle before use.

All leisure users, including those who enjoy more high speed activities will need to familiarise themselves with the Port Authority's zoning scheme and exclusion areas. "Such control measures are in place to ensure the safety of all port users - from dinghy sailors and kayakers to ferries and very large crude carriers - whilst also helping to protect the unique environment of the Haven" explains Mark. "There are dedicated areas for certain activities, and anyone thinking about going afloat, needs to understand the zoning scheme and exclusion areas that are regulated by the Authority."

Policing of the zoning scheme is undertaken by the Haven's Water Ranger, John Warneford who will also be beginning a long summer of patrols this Easter weekend. John is on hand to offer advice to all recreational users of the Haven, whilst having the ability to enforce the bye-laws of the Port Authority.

Further information can be found on Milford Haven Port Authority's web site www.mhpa.co.uk or in the Authority's 2010 Leisure User Guide.
