More Litter Champions needed!

In June, Keep Wales Tidy mounted a nationwide search to find dedicated individuals who detest litter and go the extra mile to keep their local neighbourhood clean and tidy.

To date, over 50 individuals who are desperate to do their bit to make Wales a cleaner country have signed up, but Keep Wales Tidy needs more Champions across Wales.

The ‘champions’ act as Keep Wales Tidy ambassadors out on the streets and encourage other residents in their locality to join them to form a clean-up team and share in the fun and sense of achievement being enjoyed by volunteers working on the Tidy Towns initiative.

Chief Executive of Keep Wales Tidy, Lesley Jones said, “There are many members of the public who regularly clean up their local street, park or neighbourhood and we would like to assist them in their activities and encourage more residents to get involved. It is Keep Wales Tidy’s aim to encourage people to take responsibility for the quality of their local environment, and having a team of dedicated ‘litter champions’ across Wales sets a perfect example to others”.

Four new litter champions have signed up in Pembrokeshire this month, have received their free litter-picking kits and are already making an impact in Pembroke Dock, Fishguard, Milford Haven and Saundersfoot.

Pembroke Dock Litter Champion, Dai Jones commented “Nothing gives me greater pleasure than to have started this and to have picked up 25 bags of litter in just three weeks and to see the area transformed from masses of litter to a nice green healthy woodland. All it takes is an hour a day which I’m sure anybody can find”.

Keep Wales Tidy have officers based in every county of Wales who are on the lookout for the caring individuals to become ‘litter champions’. Each champion is provided with a free clean-up kit (consisting of gloves, litter-picker, hi-vis vest, T-shirt, bags) a ‘champions’ handbook and free insurance cover.

In return, champions are simply asked to provide information on how much rubbish they collect and encourage people they meet to get involved and to dispose of their litter correctly.

The amount of litter collected and the number of hours that the volunteers have devoted to making their communities cleaner and safer will be announced at the end of the 12-month initiative.
