Members of a living history group depicting American soldiers
from World War II will be descending on Pembroke Dock for the
Forties Weekend on 2nd - 4th September.
Leading the ‘invasion’ will be Miles Worner, of the ‘Jump Into
Darkness’ group, who is authentically kitted out as a member of
the famous 82nd Airborne Division which played a crucial role in
the D-Day invasion in 1944.
Said Miles: “’Jump Into Darkness’ is a hands-on history group
re-telling the stories of the 82nd Airborne, 508th Parachute
Infantry Regiment, which came to the UK to train hard before
joining the largest invasion in history, D-Day.
“People can see and feel the equipment and weapons used by
American Paratroopers and soldiers and get an insight into the
life of a World War II soldier and what they went through. The
Regiment saw fierce fighting in Normandy and beyond.”
The Forties Weekend is being staged by the Pembroke Dock
Sunderland Trust at the Garrison Chapel in the Royal Dockyard.
Many organisations are supporting the three-day event with
displays inside and outside the Chapel and period vehicles are
also expected.
This is part of the Civic Trusts of Wales ‘Open Doors’ events
when many publically owned buildings are open to the public.
Last year a similar event at the Garrison Chapel attracted many
thousands of visitors. Entry is free and the Sunderland Trust is
seeking donations to support its heritage initiatives.
