For all that is Pembroke Dock

Youngest ever Councillor?

Eighteen year old William Rees has just become the youngest ever town councillor in Pembroke Dock and possibly one of the youngest ever in the county.  He topped the vote amongst members after they interviewed three candidates who had come forward for co-option at their last meeting, and all agreed that each of the three presented a very strong case for being the one of the five members for the Llanion ward.   It was a difficult task to pick one from three excellent choices available.

Probably what swung members in his favour was his role as Pupil Governor of Pembroke School and two periods of work experience in the London office of local MP Nick Ainger, doing casework and research.

It has been 18 months of change for Pembroke Dock Town Council with a big turn round of councillors at the last full election in May 2008 and three other new councillors in recent months.  Will Rees joins local charity campaigner, Peter Kraus and David Humphries as newcomers this winter.

As Will said in his C.V. to the council, young people are under represented in many area and with all other councillors old enough to be his parent, his voice will add a fresh viewpoint when it comes to discussing current thorny problems such as how to upgrade the Memorial Park and what facilities are needed for teenagers there.

Before that he will be focusing attention along with the other councillors on the annual budget which comes up for discussion in January.

Will is pictured with the current Mayor of Pembroke Dock Town Council, Pam George, who was a councilor when Will was still just a twinkle in his father’s eye.   She herself,  was thought of as something of a fresh faced youngster in those days, and is now the only currently serving member of the original town council which was formed after local government re-organisation  abolished the old Pembroke Borough Council in 1986.
