Jordan takes on Europe

Many people will be enjoying watching their favourite football stars on TV, back in action after their summer weeks, spent on luxury hotels and yachts around the world. Tough life isn’t it?

Spare a thought then for those sports people for whom training and competing continues all year round. One such dedicated young sportswoman is fourteen year old Jordan Hart of Pembroke Dock who has spent much of her summer holidays in Cardiff’s National Sports Hall training hard with both the Junior Talent Squad and the Wales senior players. Not only has she been training hard, but some of her spare time there, has been spent helping to coach the young developing players at their summer training camp at the national Sports Centre.

Such is her commitment that although she has spent much of her holiday weeks with the national squads in Cardiff, she has still attended the West Wales High Performance group on Monday nights in Llanelli and weekend afternoons with her personal coach, Chris Rees in the Vale of Glamorgan. He was Welsh doubles champion for many years and also coached Kelly Morgan who was at the top of Welsh Ladies badminton for over a decade and World number 7 at one time. He rates Jordan as a very similar talent to Kelly with the same work ethic that stands her way ahead of other Juniors of the same age.

Click to EnlargeIt’s fair to say that financial rewards are very hard to come by in Badminton, but such has been Jordan success this past season that the world number one Badminton equipment manufacturer – Yonex have decided that they want to be involved with her and have awarded her a two year kit contract. It may not be a name very familiar to a lot of readers but suffice to say that virtually all the Olympic medal winners at the last games used a Yonex racket. That was the reward for Jordan becoming British number one at under 15 level and gaining an almost complete haul of Gold medals at the Welsh Nationals at both under 15 and under 17.

Apart from a series of Gold level tournaments all over England and Wales, Jordan has an exciting four European events coming up. This weekend August 21-23, she travels with four other top Welsh Juniors to Langenfeld in Germany for the biggest junior tournament in that country. A fortnight after that on September 3 – 6, it’s the UK school games in Cardiff, which will be more or less a re-run of the British Championships where Jordan took under 15 gold. The top English and Scottish girls will be itching to have a go at toppling Jordan.

Straight after that it’s back to Europe on September 11 – 13 for a tournament in Malmo Sweden and just three weeks later, she’s off again to Lausanne in Switzerland. At many of these tournaments Jordan will be competing at under 17 level as well as under 15 and that tougher competition is considered essential as she is finishing off the Autumn with a massive challenge at the European Under 17 championships in Slovenia. I do hope she remembers to claim her air miles!!!
