Over 14,000 visitors have ‘landed’ at Pembroke
Dock’s unique Flying Boat Centre in the past two
years and the flare path is being set up for a
special Open Day on Friday June 24th.
This marks the second anniversary of the Centre and
coincides with the town’s Festival Week.
The Centre - located off Gate 4 of Port of Pembroke,
near South Pembrokeshire Hospital - will be open
from 10 am to 4 pm and a marquee alongside will have
special displays and exhibits, including newly
recovered parts from the Haven Sunderland, T9044.
A special invitation is made to Pembrokeshire
residents who have not yet had an opportunity to
visit the Centre - the only one in the UK which
tells the story of military flying boats.
“Our visitors come from all over the world,” said
Glynnis Iles of the Pembroke Dock Sunderland Trust
crew who operate the Centre. “There’s huge interest
in our story and our recovery plans for the
Sunderland which sank in the Haven in 1940. We hope
that many local people will come to see us on this
anniversary day.
“The Centre is run by an enthusiastic volunteer crew
and there are opportunities to join the team and to
become a Friend of the Sunderland Trust. We look
forward to seeing many local people at our Open
Day.”
* Funding for the
Flying Boat Centre is from
the Rural Development Plan for Wales 2007-2013,
which is funded by the Welsh Assembly Government,
and the European Agricultural Fund for Rural
Development (EAFRD). This is administered locally by
Pembrokeshire County Council.
