Pembrokeshire Schools show artistic flair for fireworks

School children in Pembrokeshire have once again shown their artistic talent in an art competition organised by Pembroke Dock Fire Station. The aim of the competition, is to raise awareness about firework safety and has been kindly sponsored by the Valero Oil Refinery for the past 7 years.

12 schools, from Angle to Jerffreyston entered the competition following a visit from Pembroke Dock Blue and White prior to Bonfire night, when the children were given a talk on the dangers of fireworks and how the family should enjoy them safely. The children were then asked to demonstrate what they had learnt by designing an information leaflet and poster, aimed at years 3-6.

This year´s winners in the leaflet competition were Bethan Preece of Angle VC School, 2nd was Louis O´Hara of St Mary´s School; whilst Daisy Howells of Golden Grove School won the poster competition and Leoni Scarfe of Lamphey School was runner-up.

Darren Kenniford, Crew Manager at Pembroke Dock said: "There were more entries than ever this year and reflected the great talent within our schools. The winners were chosen by Pembroke School Art teachers, who were very impressed with the quality of messages and brightly coloured entries."

A presentation evening will be held at Pembroke Dock Fire Station, on Thursday 15 December at 5 pm, where the winners and runners up will be invited for light refreshments and presentation.

All winners will receive an i-pad, i-pod and Net Book Computer, and gift vouchers. Whilst the School of the winning leaflet gets a Shield which they can display for 12 months, before being returned for the next year´s competition.

Darren Kenniford added: "Without the support of our sponsors Valero and Pembrokeshire County Commander Steve Bryant, the competition would not be possible and we would like to extend our thanks to them. "

Other runners up were Thomas Cole and Morgan Harris of St Oswalds; Rhys O´Mara and Harvey of Sageston; Ashley Waterman and Stephanie Francis of Pembroke Dock Community School; Aaron Griffiths and Morgan Davis of Stackpole School; Phoebe Butland and Tegan Smith of Lamphey School ; Rowan Kettle and Harry of Orielton School ; Chloe Bradshaw and Tye Richards of Pennar School ; Joseph Garratt and Ellie Asparassa of Monkton School.
