Green Space Takes Shape

Milford Haven Quakers were recently joined by others from all over Pembrokeshire and as far away as Swansea and Penarth, all intent on creating a quiet green space for wildlife and local residents.

Yards and yards of convolvulus and bramble roots were dug up to make way for the planting of more than 30 native trees and shrubs at the Meeting House garden. Several fruit trees along with 75 daffodils and assorted herbs were all expertly planted and a week later everything’s looking happy, despite the biblical warning about stony ground!

Looking back on the day, Clerk of Milford Haven Quakers, Jean Lewis commented “I hope everyone enjoyed it as much as I did. It was wonderful as I moved around the garden to listen to the wide-ranging conversations that were helping to nurture friendship and comradeship as everyone got ‘stuck in’ to the hard work. Now that the bare bones of the garden are in place there is still a lot of planning to do to fill in the gaps including the possibility of a pond and planning the official opening next year. Thank you everyone for all the work not least Keep Wales Tidy for their support”.

Keep Wales Tidy project officers are based in communities across Wales and provide expert advice and support. They encourage communities to adopt their local area and assist volunteers to undertake a range of environmental improvement projects to improve local biodiversity, including; habitat management, installation of otter holts, bird boxes, litter picks, removal of invasive species and the creation of new wildlife areas. Small grants are available to cover project costs.
