Improved walking and
cycling routes in Pembroke Dock
During the summer, Pembrokeshire County Council will
be putting the finishing touches for a bid to Welsh
Government for almost £300,000 in respect of improved
walking and cycling routes in Pembroke Dock, primarily
in Llanion Ward (with some schemes, such as works within
the Memorial Park and the Youth Centre, being adjacent
to the ward.
Sue Lewis, Transportation Officer and her colleague Paul
Smith, Walking and Cycling Officer, have worked very
hard indeed getting a coherent bid together. They have
been meeting individuals and organisations for many
months now and walking the areas which need attention.
They completed a community transport audit in March.
3,390 questionnaires were delivered to households in
Pembroke Dock with 726 being returned. An 18% return
rate on a questionnaire is almost unheard of, which goes
to show local residents had quite a lot to say. Most
people say they would walk more if walkways were more
pleasant and safer.
Sue and Paul have come up with a package of improvements
which include:
• Introduce a ramp and surface path to access to
Birdcage Walk from Bush & Park estate
• Provide sealed footpath and ramp connecting Amphion
Court and the Bush Camp sports ground
• Improved footpath along Hamilton Court and replace
concrete with grassy bank
• Remove bollard at the junction of Hamilton Court and
Wavell Crescent
• Remove gates across the path and provide security
fences and gates at the rear of the family centre
• Improve footway between Hamilton Court connecting
Birdcage Walk
• Provide a H marking to protect the link path between
Hamilton Court and link to Birdcage Walk
• Provide a footway eastern side of Wavell Crescent
• Provide traffic calming along Wavell Crescent
• Provide paved area to prevent car parking between
Kavanagh Court and Wavell Crescent
• Provide a path through the children’s playground on
Bush & Park Estate
• Improved footway and remove step connecting Wesley
Court and Munro Court
• Provide a shared use path along Bush Street
• Provide amber flashing lights either side of the
Community School on Bush Street
• Provide hard standing and cycle shelter at the
Community School
• Provide drop off / pick up area at the Community
School
• Provide vehicle gates at the entrance to the Community
School
• Provide cycle stands at the Youth Centre
• Provide a shared use route around the Memorial Park
and improve existing ramp on the route of the shared use
path
• Provide dropped kerbs at various locations
As you can see, the scheme is ambitious and pretty
comprehensive. The community questionnaire and responses
are lodged here in the office in Meyrick Street if you
want to pop in and have a look. I also have the map and
priority listing for the various parts of the scheme. If
you would prefer a detailed, technical chat, then please

I will be submitting a letter of support from Llanion
Communities First but if you could consider a letter of
support as an individual or as a representative of the
many organisations you belong to, that would be
wonderful. As usual with these programmes, it is a
competitive bidding process, so the more local support
we can show the better. Next year the western and
southern parts of the town will be submitted and I have
every reason to hope we will be supporting those too.
