Sunderland Trust excepts model - of a 68 ft R.A.F. High Speed Launch, No 2690

A superb scale model of a RAF launch which once graced the Milford Haven Waterway has been donated by a Swansea family to Pembroke Dock’s Flying Boat Centre. It was made by the late Henry Trollope, of Cherry Grove, Swansea, who did his National Service in the RAF’s marine craft branch in the 1950s.
The model - of a 68 ft High Speed Launch, No 2690 - was presented by Henry’s brother and sister-in-law, Roger and Jenny Trollope, of Sketty.

Said Roger: “Henry made the model after his RAF service which included time at RAF Pembroke Dock and the marine craft unit at Porthcawl. We wanted to find a good home for the model and the Flying Boat Centre is ideal.”

Centre volunteer  Derek Lawrence is delighted with the new exhibit. “Marine craft were an essential part of the operations of the flying boat station here and HSL 2690 was once a very familiar sight on the Haven in support of the Sunderland flying boats,” he said. “This is a lovely model.”  The volunteer-run Centre tells some of the stories of RAF Pembroke Dock and its famous Sunderlands. The Sunderland Trust, which operates the Centre, plans to recover a Sunderland which sank 70 years ago in the local waterway.

Since opening last June the Centre has had 3,500 visitors and is open throughout the year. Contact 01646 623428, www.pdst.co.uk
