For all that is Pembroke Dock

Streetgames volunteers show how it’s done

Two young volunteers who have had Pembroke Dock youths ‘climbing the walls’ attended a special presentation ceremony in Cardiff recently in the company of the First Minister of Wales, Carwyn Jones.

Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority’s Go4It! project leader Tom Moses nominated Marcus Wood and Llewellyn (Welly) Heywood-Lewis, both from Pembroke Dock, for Co-operative Streetgames Young Volunteer of the Year Awards.

Tom Moses said: “I nominated Welly because he’s channelled his cycling hobby and skills into really valuable, constructive community work with young people and has been a great role model. Marcus has gained great experience and started qualifications as an activity instructor while encouraging local kids to get involved in less conventional but accessible sports such as cycling and climbing. I’m really proud of what they’ve both achieved and pleased that their hard work has been recognised.”

Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority’s Go4It project was one of the first Welsh projects to link with The Co-operative Streetgames project. It aims to help young people from disadvantaged areas gain sports coaching and community leadership skills by volunteering at their local neighbourhood sports project.

The awards, now in their second year, recognise the outstanding work being carried out by young people involved in The Co-operative StreetGames Young Volunteers initiative.

The award nominations considered a number of factors including skills and qualifications gained, general attitude, impact on other young people and their community, as well as their personal journey and achievements.

Michael Fairclough, Head of Communities and Campaigns at The Co-operative Group remarked: “We’ve now had over a thousand young people volunteer with The Co-operative StreetGames Young Volunteers programme and collectively, their achievements and contribution to their communities are outstanding.”

First Minister of Wales Carwyn Jones presented the award to winner Ashley Pyke from Newport Positive Futures project saying: “I’m pleased to be here today to recognise the achievements of these young people who provide an important and useful service to their local communities at the same time as gaining a wide range of skills which will stand them in good stead in the future.”
