>Young Fire Fighters Pass out with Pride
Young Fire Fighters Project Web Link (YFF) On an overcast Sunday afternoon in Pembroke Dock 12 young people from in and around Pembroke and Pembroke Dock celebrated at a pass out parade at which they demonstrated the skills they have learned over the last 12 weeks of this exciting and innovative 2 year scheme. In the presence of Richard Smith Deputy Chief Office of Mid and West Wales Fire Brigade, Nick Welbey County Commander Mid and West Wales Fire Brigade, Councillor Pearl Llewellyn Fire and Rescue Authority Member, Councillors from Pembroke Dock and Pembroke including our Mayor Councillor Sue Perkins, the volunteer instructors from Pembroke Dock Fire Station lead by Paul Dyson and many family and friends, the Young Fire Fighters from both Blue and White Watches handled a rescue, demonstrated their prowess with fire tenders, hoses and ladders. The afternoon was made even more educational and fun by a lively and sometimes noisy demonstration of the brigades search and rescue dogs Flame and Holly.( sorry about the lack of pictures of the dog section...technical problems) We were also give a graphic demonstration of what can happen in chip pan fire......even from a safe distance you could feel the heat. Young Fire Fighter Association The first branch of the Young Fire Fighters Association was established in October 2001 based at Morriston Fire Station. Twenty-four 13 to 14 year olds were recruited from local comprehensives in the area, and 10 volunteers. Due to the success of this branch, an additional scheme has been set up in the Blaenymaes area of Swansea. Aims and objectives of Young Fire-fighters Association What the brigade wants to achieve Improve communication between the fire service and community develop positive relations between fire service and the youth promote the young with self discipline, social consciousness and community awareness potentially improve recruitment profiles and patterns increase fire safety awareness in the community What the brigade want the young fire fighters to achieve Form an interest in the fire brigade develop self confidence improve social skills and form part of the community work as part of a group/team qualify to a BTEC or similar qualification How will the brigade achieve this The young will receive adult respect and support high quality learning environment and equipment high standards of health and safety highly trained instructors a personal development program within the scheme appropriate fire brigade training activity weekends and camp Pembroke Dock Web Project aj |
