Volunteers take pride in their communityThe recently launched Keep Wales Tidy Pride in Our Communities project annual report highlights the fact that 320 tonnes of waste were removed by volunteers across south west Wales during the year. The project, operating across south west Wales, has five full-time officers working with local communities in a bid to reduce the problem of fly-tipping. Last year, 29 voluntary groups contributed over 3,984 hours in 155 events. This resulted in the removal of over 320 tonnes of waste. Probation Services and Young Offending Teams took part in a further 10 events, contributing 307 hours and the removal of over 10.5 tonnes of waste. NARC, a team of volunteer divers based in Pembrokeshire, removed over 4 tonnes of fly-tipped material during a number of underwater clean ups in Pembroke Dock. Graham King, Chairman of the South Wales Area Environment Group welcomed the report, and said that it demonstrated that a multi-agency approach, coupled with community action, was proving to be successful in reducing the problem of fly-tipping. |
