The Mechanics' Institute, situated in Dimond St.,
is a handsome building.
Its foundation stone was laid 27th June 1862. by Mrs. Ramsay, wife of
Captain George Ramsay (now Earl of Dalhousie), R N.. C. R.,
Superintendent
of Her Majesty's Dockyard, and one of the patrons of the above named
institution.
The site was liberally granted by T. 0. Meyrick, Esq., for the
term
of 99 years, at the nominal rent of half-a-crown, per annum. It
possesses a
fine reading room, which is amply supplied with all the daily and weekly
newspapers, periodicals, etc.; and is open from 9 a.m. to 10p.m. The
Library
contains 3,500 volumes; there is a small museum in connection with it.
Members pay sixpence per month for the numerous advantages, which this
excellent institution offers.
